What is Narrative Therapy?
"Narrative therapy is a respectful and collaborative approach to helping people change. It focuses on the stories of people’s lives and is based on the idea that problems are manufactured in social, cultural and political contexts. Each person produces the meaning of their life from the stories that are available in these contexts."
Narrative therapy is an approach which centres people as the experts in their own lives and views problems as separate from people. Narrative therapy assumes that people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of problems in their lives.
"The central idea of Narrative Therapy is: The person never is the problem. The person has a problem. A problem is something you have, not something you are. You don’t have to change your nature. You have to fight the influence of the problem in your life."
